Figs Are Delicious

Happy Tuesday!

I’m feelin’ good and back to normal – thanks for your comments to my last post! I think the best advice as far as hydration and running is: listen to your body and drink when you’re thirsty, yeah?

Since Sunday was a rest day, I set out Monday morning for some easy miles. I felt great, so the run quickly turned into a tempo – hooray! Here’s how it went down:

  • Mile 1: 9:15
  • Mile 2: 8:11
  • Mile 3: 7:59
  • Mile 4: 8:21
  • Mile 5: 8:15
  • Mile 6: 9:14
  • Mile 7: 9:00

So, 7 miles in 1:01:21. I’m trying to work on a quicker turnover and shorter strides, and can really tell the difference if I put a conscious effort into it.

Today was 5.0 easy miles in some light rain, which I actually kinda like running in. It’s slightly calming and soothing, but definitely a little messy! We’ve been having some seriously yucky weather here in NYC. Rainy and humid, with absolutely no chance at all for a decent hair day :)

Dear fall: please come back. Thanks, Kelly

So, I’m not sure how it escaped me until now, but I love figs! I picked some up at Whole Foods this weekend but didn’t really know how I wanted to use them.

One of my favorite food blogs, We Are Not Martha, inspired me to caramelize them with some sugar.

I also used a ripe pear that was on its last legs.

I chopped up the figs length-wise and cut the pear into chunks, and sprinkled with brown sugar

Threw them onto a heated pan (medium heat) and waited for them to heat up and the sugars to caramelize

I made sure to turn them over, and finally made use of some tongs I bought a year ago…

I added some agave nectar for a little extra flavor

And then decided to have the fruit on top of – what else - some Greek yogurt!

I threw in some raw oats and walnuts

And then added the warm, delicious fruit, taking extra care to get all the sweet juices from the pan

Looks a little messy, but I assure you it was amazing and delicious! I ate it for lunch/brunch, but this could also make a great dessert!

I’ve got a busy day of work and school ahead of me – hope everyone has a good day!

Question: Do you share my love for figs? Any good fig recipes?

We went to Tipsy Parsons in Chelsea a week or two ago, and my boyfriend ordered figs wrapped in bacon for his appetizer. I guess he’d never had a fig before, and he hasn’t been able to stop raving about how much he loves this dish… enough so to get figs and bacon to try to recreate it. So you’re not alone in recently discovering the amazingness of figs!

you know i’m not that familiar with figs. i have tried them before but didn’t fall in love. i think i would like them as part of something, like what you created. i DO love dates– have you ever had those?? for some reason they are similar to each other in my mind. my grandmother always brought stuffed dates to our holiday get togethers (date stuffed with a nut… walnut?).

    nice run!

That looks wonderful! I don’t know that I’d have the patience to do that, though. I always just want to chow right down on fresh fruit. :-) I did save a couple figs that were on their last legs, though, the last time I bought them (hooray for Whole Foods sales! well, “sales”). They’re in the freezer. Got any suggestions for frozen figs? I was thinking muffins… quickbread…?

Oh yum, I LOVE warm pears with brown sugar. And wouldn’t you know, I’ve never had an actual fig before. Do Fig Newton’s count?

love the impromptu tempo! and i’ve never actually had a fig before. i feel like that’s a sin after seeing your dish

Yup, figs are one of my favorites!!! I like your idea with the yogurt, I’ve never tried it. I usually roast them in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes with brown sugar and then add them to my salad – yummy!

that looks amazing. We just bought fage yogurt from Costco. I forgot how much better it is than any other greek yogurt.
I’m in love with figs too but I eat them on oatmeal, yogurt, and dessert type things mostly.

I like the flavor of figs, but their texture and appearance totally skieves me out!

I’m with Madeline – I’m not quite down with the texture of figs, but I love eating dried dates and almond butter!
