Fred Lebow 5 Mile Race Recap

First race of 2011 = DONE!

First PR of 2011 = DONE!

I’d say we’re off to a good start.

Because of the storm that wasn’t on Friday, NYRR postponed the Fred Lebow 5 miler from Saturday to Sunday, so I kinda had to re-jigger the weekend training plan. Here’s how it went down:

  • Saturday: 6 miles easy
  • Sunday: 4.5 miles easy warm-up, 5 mile race, 1.65 miles easy cooldown

The plan worked well, even though I woke up to 15 degree windchills on Sunday (yikes!).

Pre-race banana and PB

I timed my warm-up so I would make it to the start with little time to stand around, and met up with Lindsey. We only had to stand around for a few minutes, but it was freeeeeezing!

When the race started, I was a little iffy about how the legs were feelin’, but they pepped right up and I actually felt great throughout the race. Here are the stats:

Warm-up

  • Mile 1: 8:58
  • Mile 2: 8:58
  • Mile 3: 8:54
  • Mile 4: 8:56
  • Mile 0.5: 9:17

Race:

  • Mile 1: 8:03
  • Mile 2: 7:35
  • Mile 3: 7:38
  • Mile 4: 7:51
  • Mile 5: 7:32
  • Mile 6 (cooldown): 8:39
  • Mile 7 (cooldown): 8:47

So 11.15 miles in 1:33:51 – a decent effort for my first official week of marathon training! My official race time was 38:43, 7:44/mile, which is a little shy of a one minute PR. I’ll take it!

When I got home I refueled with some Barbara’s Shredded Oats and Spoonfuls with blueberries, cinnamon and almond milk after a much-needed hot shower…

And had a few cupsa’ decaf while I played with my new Macbook Air (which is bananas amazing!)…

And got ready to meet Sofia for brunch, which was also bananas amazing (because she is awesome!) – stay tuned for a recap.

I’m keeping track of my marathon training here if you want to check it out.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Question: Do you race in the cold? Do you tweak your warm-up in chilly weather? I warmed up for longer than usual, which helped keep me fairly warm until the start.

you are batting .1000 there lady! congrats on the pr. i don’t typically race in the winter just because there aren’t many around here but i’d warm up for a bit longer too. that’s what usually happens when i’m simply running in the cold

Congratulations!! Not gonna lie…after a horrible, horrible experience racing last February, I am highly disinclined to race in the freezing cold again. I am getting soft in my old age! The problem with warming up before a NYRR race is that you have to sit in the corrals for 10 minutes beforehand…agony!

I love Macs!!! They are the best!! Sounds like an amazing run… congrats on an awesome PR. I personally love working out in the cold much better than the heat. Yeah its cold at first but then it gets much better : )

Definitely not a cold-weather runner. I wish I were, but I think it would just end up making me miserable during my workouts everyday. Can’t wait for spring!

Girl, I don’t even leave my house when it’s cold. well, that’s not true but I’m inspired by your getting out and being a baller in that weather! congrats! I have never seen a 5 mile race before but you had some awesome splits for it

    Congrats on the PR!!

I’m actually pretty OK with winter running as long as I’m in motion and I warm up for races much in the same way you did. If a NYRR race, I’ll just run from home and try to time it so that I enter the corral just before the gun even if that means starting further back b/c the corrals are closed. After crossing the finish line I need to keep moving to stave off the freezing feeling and run back home as a cool down. I do find that I can’t really race this way very well in the winter but if I go into it knowing that I’m not disappointed.

    Keep up the great work!

Great job! I was doing ok running in the 30s, but the wind chill lately has me huddling on the couch. I’m hoping it breaks soon cause I was enjoying it; I’d much rather run in this than the 90 degrees and unrelenting sun we’ll have in 5 months!

    Nice race!
I used to race in really cold weather when I lived in northern NY. It was cold for most of outdoor track season and sometimes snowed in cross-country.

your kicking butt with those times. I HATE running in the cold but when I’m able to run I do it. I usually don’t warm up long enough but after this injury it will be the most important thing for me.

Congrats on starting 2011 with a great race! I need to sign up for the Gridiron 4M…

I race in the cold. It’s fun to warm up with hot cocoa after!

OMG! I just found your blog from a comment you left on HRG. I used to eat the EXACT SAME lunch everyday. PB&J, yogurt, fruit. When I got pregnant a year ago, it just wasn’t enough so I started doing different foods and haven’t really gone back to the old standby even though I’m not pregnant anymore.
