Motivation & The Long Run

OMG, how is it September??

No seriously, how on earth is it September??

I am a huge fan of summer, but have to say I’m ready for fall. Crisp weather, boots, colorful leaves, bouquets of sharpened pencils, pumpkin flavors, I love it all.

Fall also means the marathon is that much closer (65 days!) and September is going to be my hardest month in terms of mileage. If all goes as planned, I’ll hit around 220 miles total and get in two of three 20 milers. I guess there’s a reason why it’s often called the “Monster Month,” or the most important and difficult chunk of marathon training.

I like challenges, so I’m kind of excited for all the hard work ahead of me.

September will definitely show me what I’m made of running-wise, and it’s also a ridiculously busy month for work and I start classes next week. With all of these things going on at once I tend to be a bit of a stress case. I’m currently brainstorming ways avoid this and instead kick ass until October – stay tuned for updates (and please share any tips!).

This week’s running weather has been kind of fall-like too, with the past couple of days feeling delightfully cool. This morning I had a mid-week long-ish run on tap (9 miles) and met up with Ali for a good chunk it.

(photo stolen from Ali) Yay, sweaty running shots!

Breakfast while email checking/blog reading was the usual sprouted grain cinnamon raisin bread with peanut butter, cream cheese and berries

If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, maybe you know I usually don’t need that much motivation getting out the door to get my run on. Even so, sometimes hitting the roads day after day can get a little monotonous, and it’s easy to take for granted the simple fact that I am able to run.

During the hurricanepocalypse this past weekend, I started reading a new book I had been wanting to read for a while.

The Long Run, by Matt Long

From the first page, this book has blown my mind. Like, tearing up on the subway and wanting to stay up all night to read it blowing my mind.

In short, it’s about an NYC firefighter, marathoner and Ironman named Matt Long who was hit by a bus while riding his bike up Third Avenue one morning and by all accounts, probably should have died.

But he didn’t. He fought for years to get back to having a normal life, and even though he could barely take two steps in front of him at one point, he dreamed of being able to run again.

I could go on about the book, but won’t spoil it because YOU NEED TO READ IT. Seriously, I will lend it to you.

I think we all need moments that remind us of how lucky we are to be able to run, walk, move, whatever. It’s so easy to forget until the second the ability is lost for whatever reason.

This is corny, but to me, running is truly a gift. And every time I find myself taking it for granted or needing some motivation (especially leading up to the big show), I’m going to think of Matt’s story.

Question: What motivates or inspires you to run? Or in life in general?

september is my biggest month running-wise and craziest month work-wise (teacher here!). i’m figuring out a way to kick ass on both fronts. let me know if you think of one first :)

i LOVE the long run! i read it last month for my own personal book club, but haven’t posted the write-up yet (well-played, ellen). it really is awesome. did you see matt long on jon stewart a few weeks ago??

You’ve got me hooked, now I haveee to read this book!
Being able to accomplish something like running makes me feel stronger than I ever did. It gives me a sense of comradery with other runners that I pass or meet. Plus, nothing beats the feeling of a runners high =]

i secretly love the monster month. it makes the taper period (somewhat) bearable.

the long run is on my must read list. everyone raves about it.

running IS truly a gift and i often remind myself to not take it for granted. my marathon is on 9/11 and i can’t think of a more fitting tribute to honor the victims than by running 26.2.

I’ve read a few RW articles about Matt Long – what an amazing story! I love running, but I definitely still have days (ahem mornings…) when I just don’t feel Luke getting myself out the door. Making running dates helps, but womp womp I’ve been lacking in those lately, so I just try to remember that running is something I GET to do, not something I HAVE to do. Never fails to put things in perspective :)

*like not Luke – damn autocorrect!

My Aunt’s about to start chemo….that puts a lot in perspective in terms of my whining, ha.

You’ve officially terrified me to ever ride my bike in NYC again…

I did the Achille’s Hope NYRR run this summer and 1/2 of the racers are in wheel chairs and running along them really made me realize just what you said, we’re lucky to run.

True story – two of my good friends (also fellow marathon runners) and I met Matt Long (briefly!) at a restaurant last year here in NYC! He was having dinner with one of the editors of Runner’s World – it was pretty exciting!

Also, great posts and love hearing about your training – good luck entering your monster month!

    • Kelly

thank you!! I would love to meet Matt Long – he lives i my ‘hood so I’m hoping I run into him someday :)

I’m with you- how is it already September???

I’m struggling with the motivation factor at the moment. I think what helps me along is an end goal. Which I really don’t have right now… so I’m trying to correct it!

I am with you – how is it Sept?!? I love that reference to You’ve Got Mail though. I love that movie too much. I also need to read that book.

Hmm – I find inspiration from the people I aspire to be like – it may be a doctor, a gymnast, a runner. I admire the people who are passionate about what they are involved in and that’s what I strive to do, too. And its that passion for something that drives me.

    • Kelly

<3 You've Got Mail. I will lend you the book – it's amazing!

First off – STRESS – You must read my post about the “stress buster jar.” It’s based off an article I read in Women’s Health magazine which analyzed why women “like” being stressed.

Next, it’s like you’re reading my mind with this post. I definitely want to read this book. It just moved to the top of my list! Interestingly, my first physical therapy appointment is tomorrow. My injury has hampered my ability to run but hasn’t taken it away. I can run 2-3 miles without feeling pain but I STILL get frustrated. Then I read about the people in books like this and it really puts it in perspective.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of working with some Paralympic Athletes for my job. Listening to stories from these people all day really motivated me and reminded me to count my blessings.

That said, what motivates me most about running is the feeling I know I get when I’m cruising during a good run – feeling unstoppable. I REALLY miss that feelin and hope a few good weeks of therapy will get it back!

    • Kelly

Oooh, I will read that post! And, you will come back! PT always, always helps me come back from injury. Good luck :)

  • http://keepingitrealfood.com Jess

I’m a little embarrassed I knew exactly where the bouquets of sharpened pencils line comes from!

    • Kelly

and I love that you know that!!

  • http://whatkateiscooking.com Kate (What Kate is Cooking)

I’m trying to remind myself that I’m lucky that I’m able to run. So many people would love to be able to and can’t because of injuries or limitations, so the next time I complain about running on a Saturday morning, I need to suck it up and enjoy it!

  • http://www.momatthebarre.com Sam @ Mom At The Barre

I’m a sucker for stories about people who prevailed when all odds were against them so I would love to read this book. I can’t believe it’s September either. Where did the summer go???
Good luck with Monster Month! Looking forward to reading about it!

  • http://runnernspice.com Jayme @ Runner-n-Spice

ahh – I’m always looking for good running books to read. I actually just bought one today, “Run Less, Run Faster”. It has some running stories and some training plan info – which is why I bought it. I hope its good!

Also – did you blog layout/colour change?? I like it.

    • Kelly

yeah! I changed to self hosting. Thank you :)

  • http://runningseal.com Celia

I saw Matt Long speak and he is truly an inspiring person! I also have his book and have been meaning to read it. You post made me put it higher on my list of priorities to get to!

Being able to run is truly a gift and something I do because I love it which is sometimes good to remember for me when I get too wrapped up in worrying about a bad run, not being fast enough, etc. When I lack motivation I usually think about my longer term goals and how I usually always feel better after a run. There really is not a run I have regretted doing (except when I was forcing myself to run injured a while back making things worse…).

Good luck with your heavy weeks of training!! Can’t wait for the NYC Marathon either :)

  • http://www.naturastrideblog.com Kate @ NaturaStride

Nice – you know what, I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts during my long runs and have been thinking about downloading an audio book to listen to during long runs (this will be a first for me, so we’ll see how it goes!) But I definitely wanted to find something motivational – I’m gonna try and download this as an audio book today. (Thanks!)
The thing that’s keeping me motivated for my half marathon coming up in a couple weeks is all the work I’ve ALREADY done – I’ve been working pretty damn hard, and I don’t want it to go to waste. So that’s keeping me going!
Good luck this month! (PS: love You’ve Got Mail!)

  • http://www.runforyourlifeblog.com Emilia @ Run for Your Life

Ooh thanks for the book rec! I’ll have to check it out!
Good luck with the high mileage month! What’s the longest distance you think you’ll cover before Race Day?

  • http://lovesweatandbeers.wordpress.com Tiff @ love sweat and beers

I’m excited for fall too. As for motivation, I get injured pretty easily. I guess I’m a wimp. Either way, having to wait through the healing process or having to fight through a little pain usually motivates me. There’s nothing like someone or something telling you No to make you want to get up and do it.

  • http://www.healthontherun.net Lauren

Yikes! You definitely have a lot on your plate this month!! Good luck getting it all in. Hopefully the increased miles will help reduce the stress instead of adding to it.

I haven’t read that book but now I really want to! Stories like that really give me a good wake up call when I’m feeling sorry for myself or lacking the motivation to run. His story sounds so inspiring. I need to get the book!

  • http://balancingme.wordpress.com Grace @ Balancing Me

Oooh, I’m going to have to check this book out. On my new Kindle!

By the way, I just posted about September and the complete joy it brings me. After posting, I clicked through my list of regularly-programmed blog readings — you are on said list! — and read about how you enjoy bouquets of sharpened pencils. You are my new hero.

  • http://runnerscookie.com Corey

I can’t believe it’s September either- I have mixed feelings about it, mostly excitement to be starting so many new things though.
That book sounds incredibly inspiring, and a great reminder to be thankful for each step we’re able to take. Definitely a good message for me to be reminded of today – thanks, Kelly!

  • http://marathonmaiden.wordpress.com/ Karyn

well it doesn’t feel like sept 1st so i’m going to keep thinking it’s not ;)

holler to monster month! good luck with it :)

  • http://smilesfromcallie.blogspot.com/ sMiles from Callie

I’ve been wanting to read this book! I’m definitely going to get it now. My original motivation during training this past spring came from my boyfriend’s best friend who passed away from leukemia before I met him. His family has a few different memorial events for him to raise money for his foundation throughout the year. One of them is a 5k during Christmas time. On the event’s website is a quote from his saying, “just run because you can.” I basically started crying when I read that and felt truly blessed to be able to run and live my life. Now when I need some motivation, I think about that quote and just run.

  • http://www.susanruns.com Susan – Nurse on the Run

I keep meaning to read that book because I believe he was on my unit for a little while!

bouquets of newly sharpened pencils rule :)

thanks for talking up the book! i’d heard of it but so glad to hear that it is an amazing read. i want to pick it up ASAP. always in need of a lil extra motivation on reserve.
